Lucy Alibar Interview with Popsugar

January 10, 2013 Team Beasts
Lucy Beasts PopSugar

Lucy Beasts PopSugar

Entertainment and culture blog Popsugar sat down with writer Lucy Alibar to find out more about the real life story that inspired Beasts.

PopSugar: Being from Florida, how did your own Southern upbringing impact the movie?

Lucy: The reason I even wrote the play to begin with, and where it all started was, my dad was really sick and I was up in New York. I think it was trying to explain his parenting or our relationship. It might even be a rural thing vs. an urban thing, I don't know, but Southern men yell. They break sh*t when they're angry — you know, sh*t gets broke! And I think a lot of people just didn't get that about my dad, and they were like, "Well, he shouldn't yell, he shouldn't have hit you." I think maybe it started from me defending my dad a lot to people who didn't even realize they were criticizing him, but were maybe criticizing his way of parenting. Then, growing up in the South, you have this real ear for other peoples' stories. People talk in stories and you just find out a lot about other peoples' business.

Quvenzhané's Best Year Ever

January 3, 2013 Team Beasts
Nazie.USA Today

When young Quvenzhané Wallis was cast as the lead role of Hushpuppy by an unknown filmmaker in Lousiana, her mother, Qulyndreia, had few expectations beyond it being a life experience for her daughter.  She tells USA Today:

"We were under the impression that they would show the movie and after Sundance that would be it...we had no idea in a million years that we would be where we are today."

From Utah to the south of France and now, just maybe, a place amongst the Oscar nominated elite, Quvenzhané Wallis has had a pretty memorable 2012.

Check out this USA Today slide show of Quvenzhané's best year ever.

President Obama's Picks of 2012

December 31, 2012 Team Beasts
Obama People Mag

People Magazine interviewed the President and First Lady of the United States for their year end issue.  When asked what his favorite films of 2012 were, the President had this to say:

People: A movie you loved so much the past year you'd see it again?

The President: Beasts of the Southern Wild was spectacular. We saw it with friends and my nieces, one of whom is only 4 years old, and it captivated all of them.

A shout out from the President is a pretty cool way to end an incredible, amazing, unforgettable year! So much to be thankful for as we head into 2013. Needless to say, we'll never forget this moment.

Indiewire's Best Movie Music Moments of 2012

December 10, 2012 Team Beasts
Indie Wires Best Music

Indie Wires Best Music

Thanks to Indiewire for including 'Once There Was A Hushpuppy/The Confrontation' by Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin as one of their best movie music moments of 2013.

The combination of Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin, composer and composer/director is a deadly one that should not be slept on. Their passionate, anthemic and melancholy-tinged scores are akin to the symphonic swells, childhood pains and bittersweet aches channeled by Arcade Fire. Romer and Zeitlin's compositions have the same heartrending trajectory of hope, sadness and fervent emotion, so much so that the Obama campaign used one of their songs from the director’s short “Glory At Sea” for one of their key commercials in the last week of their 2008 campaign. And so everything that is wonderful about their work is alive, magnetic and present in the magical and muddy fairytale “Beasts of The Southern Wild.” There’s plenty of score pieces in the film that are wistful, beautiful and filled with longing, but perhaps none is so great as the motif theme, perhaps represented well by “The Confrontation,” that reaches its stunning crescendo in the final moments of the film and the score piece “Once There Was A Hushpuppy.” The film’s precocious lead Hushpuppy’s father has sadly passed on and the young girl gives her little voice-over monologue about perseverance, survival, hope and community. The lugubrious music rises, your emotions tremble and much like the spirit of hopeful New Orleans funerals, this lament bursts into an apex of tremendous joy and celebration. Suffice to say it made many of us literally burst into tears the moment we experienced it.
