Buttermilk Drops come to NYC!
By now, many of you are familiar with the story of how Dwight Henry was cast as Wink in Beasts of the Southern Wild. A baker by profession, Mr. Henry, owned a dessert cafe, The Buttermilk Drop, across the street from the Court 13 production office where Beasts producers would often meet for coffee. After months went by searching for the perfect Wink (which included hundreds of auditions with local and professional actors), producer Michael Gottwald realized that the man they were hoping to discover may have been someone a little closer to home. He convinced Mr. Henry to come in and read for the role of Wink and the rest, as they say, is casting history.
Since then, Mr. Henry has already completed another film with director Steve McQueen, starring Brad Pitt. He was honored by the Los Angeles Film Critics as the Best Supporting Actor of 2012 and continues to be recognized by audiences around the world as a true star and artist. Despite all the Hollywood hoopla, Mr. Henry's most beloved stage is still in the kitchen.
The cast and crew traveled across country for the Beasts Sundance premiere, bringing along over 1000 of Mr. Henry's famed Buttermilk Drops to pass out to festival goers. Word of his delectable delights eventually landed in the ear of restaurateur Richie Notar of Nobu, who had just recently purchased a space in Harlem, New York City and was looking for his next culinary endeavor.
New York Magazine's Grubstreet recounts:
After buying the Lenox, Notar was brainstorming uses for an adjacent space when he happened to talk to a film-industry friend. The friend had recently returned from Sundance Film Festival where he’d tasted one of the 1,200 buttermilk drops Henry handed out during the Beasts Park City premiere, and encouraged Notar to investigate. (Henry landed his role in Beasts after Buttermilk Drop partial producers encouraged him to audition.) “I fell in love with the story,” Notar says. “Here’s a guy that’s a nonactor that takes his product that he’s proud of and went over to Sundance with it and gave it away. I liked that about him, that’s my entrepreneurial gene as well. And then when I sent Mike down there, he said, ‘Yeah, it’s the real deal. It’s good, and it’s perfect fit for what we are doing.’”
This spring, Dwight Henry and Richie Notar will bring a little New Orleans love to New York City "in the form of buttermilk drops, king cakes, and beignets, plus savory staples like Henry’s gumbo."
We wish Mr. Henry the best on his newest endeavor! Our taste buds can't wait for springtime!

Hungarian Beasts
Üdvözlünk titeket a Teknőben, magyarok!
Since our first public screening at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild has screened in every continent on the planet with the exception of Antarctica. We've had the pleasure of working with international distributors whose enthusiasm for Beasts we are forever grateful for.
Our friends in Hungary, Mozinet, will be releasing Beasts across the country on January 11, 2013. They began working on the release plan for the film last summer and quickly hatched a plan to convince one of the most influential art house cinemas in Budapest, Művész, to allow them to build a Beasts inspired installation in the theater's lobby.
In September, director Benh Zeitlin's visited Hungary for a screening of Beasts at the Cinefest Filmfestival in Miskolc, Eastern-Hungary. With a subtitled version of the film in hand, Mozinet hosted a private screening for the managers of the cinema, hoping they would be inspired to get behind the film. Luckily, they were and gave the green light for an art installation to be built months ahead of the theatrical release.
The end result is this massive sculpture of an Auroch breaking through the Arctic iceberg. The installation made of wood, straw, chicken wire and paper measures 3 meters tall, and weights 330lbs.
If you or anyone you know happens to be in Hungary, we'd love for you to visit this close to real life Auroch and send us a picture! We'll be happy to send you something special for your trouble. Just shoot us an email at beasts@beastsofthesouthernwild.com.
Again, Beasts of the Southern Wild opens Jan 10 in Hungary. If you'd like to attend a preview screening on Jan 9 hosted by the WWF Hungary, click here for more details.
Welcome to the Bathtub, Hungary!

Magyar Vadak!
A Sundance Filmfesztiválon 2012 januárjában tartott első nyilvános vetítésünk óta, A messzi dél vadjai a Föld összes kontinensén bemutatkozott már, az Antarktiszt leszámítva. Nagy örömmel dolgoztunk együtt a forgalmazókkal, akik szerte a világban bemutatták a filmet, és akiknek a lelkesedéséért örökké hálásak lehetünk.
Magyar barátaink, a Mozinet stábja, 2013. január 10-én mutatja be országosan a filmet.
Szeptemberben Benh Zeitlin rendező Magyarországra érkezett, amikor a Vadak szerepelt a miskolci Jameson Cinefest Filmfesztivál versenyprogramjában (ahol díjat is nyert).
A fotókat a beasts@beastsofthesouthernwild.com címre küldjétek.
A messzi dél vadjait január 10-én mutatják be Magyarországon. Ha már egy nappal előbb szeretnéd megnézni a filmet, a WWF Magyarország számára szervezett jótékonysági vetítésen megteheted, amiről itt találsz további információt.
Üdvözlünk titeket a Teknőben, magyarok!
Wil Kristin knows how to Beast it!
When we decided to hold a contest to celebrate the Beasts Blu-Ray and Vinyl release, we never could have anticipated the degree of creative and touching responses we would receive. We were truly moved and inspired by the volume of people who came forward with ways they find to beast it! everyday. We circulated the entries amongst director Benh Zeitlin, Beasts producers and outreach staff and needless to say, it was incredibly difficult to decide on five winners. In fact, all were our favorite in one way or another.
Each of the letters, videos, and photos from our fellow Beasts struck a chord in us, and we are grateful and humble that they not only allowed Beasts to play a significant role in their life, but have allowed us to share their story with the rest of the Beasts family.
Wil Kristin from Portland, Oregon was selected to win the big Beasts gift pack. Here's his letter to us:
I lost my father to cancer this year. After it happened, it seemed every film I had watched somehow was dealing with a parent dying, but it wasn’t until I saw Beasts that I truly and deeply felt a strong emotional connection.
Sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly, I have been promoting the film to friends, colleagues and anyone that I deeply trust or know is in need of some healing.
Multiple friends have come to me leaving lengthy voice mails about how much I would love the film (they know me well).
Finally, it’s been such a tough year for my family. The film carries extra weight for us because Dan Romer produced my twin brother’s album, and the guys from his band performed a song from it at my Dad’s memorial.
I invite you to watch that video (last one on the page) and skim through the other material I cut together the night before my father's memorial.
In the first video, you’ll see that my dad was the only punk in the beginning of the Terminator to Beast a nude Arnold Schwarzenegger. Through the memory of my dad's positive spirit, I will continue to Beast the pain of losing him so early in my life.
Thanks to the whole Court 13 team for a truly rewarding experience.
Warmly, Wil
